1. Svengoolie

Adult (2 years) · Male · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 22 mi from Chicago

Meet Svengoolie!

He may look a little rough around the edges, but this Svengoolie is not scary at all! This sweet orange tabby boy has had a rough start in life. For his first two years, he endured a hoarding situation. His disposition shows that he must have received plenty of love, but his body condition shows that there was likely not enough food to go around. Sven is looking for a home where he will be able to count on having enough food at each meal to help him put on a little weight and develop a shiny, healthy coat of fur. He has a healthy appetite and is good with his litter box, and should thrive in a home environment.

Read more about Svengoolie

Sven just arrived at our cat center and started out very shy, hiding behind his blankets. As soon as he realized he was safe, he allowed himself to soak up all of the love our volunteers have to give. Sven comes out of his hiding spot as soon as we open his condo door. He leans his head into hands for pets, and immediately starts making biscuits and purring. He is one of those cats that likes to make sure that you are petting him with both hands!

Given his background, Sven needs a quiet home where he will be able to settle in at his own pace. He would likely do well with another cat in the home, but at this time dogs and young kids would be too much for him. He does give an occasional love bite when you are petting him, so his adopters should know how to gently redirect. We rescued him from his previous situation, but you can save him by giving him the loving home that he deserves.

4. Fuzzy Tail

Young · Female · Maine Coon / Mixed (long coat) · 7 mi from Chicago

Meet Fuzzy Tail – A Little Girl with a Big Heart and Lots of Love!

Don't let her name fool you—Fuzzy Tail isn't just about the fluff! This adorable little lady has a personality that's every bit as delightful as her appearance.

Fuzzy Tail may be small for a Maine Coon, but what she lacks in size, she more than makes up for in affection! She's an incredibly friendly, loving girl who believes that one of life's greatest pleasures is a good cuddle with her favorite human.

Read more about Fuzzy Tail

If you're looking for a cat who genuinely enjoys human companionship, Fuzzy Tail is your girl! She loves attention, welcomes affection, and is always happy to spend some quality time with the people she loves.

Of course, even the most devoted cuddlebug needs a little personal time, and Fuzzy Tail has a favorite retreat—her cat tree! Whether she's lounging on a comfortable platform, surveying the room from above, or simply enjoying a peaceful afternoon, her cat tree is her happy place. A nice tall cat tree in her forever home would certainly earn you extra points!

When it comes to other cats, Fuzzy Tail is wonderfully easygoing. She gets along just fine with her feline roommates, although she doesn't seem particularly interested in making them the center of her world. She's perfectly content to share her space with other cats while focusing most of her affection on her humans.

That makes her a lovely candidate for either a home with other friendly, respectful cats or a home where she can enjoy being the center of attention.

With her sweet personality, affectionate nature, and charmingly fluffy appearance, Fuzzy Tail has all the makings of a wonderful companion.

If you've been dreaming of a friendly little sweetheart who loves cuddles, appreciates a good cat tree, and will happily make herself at home in your heart, Fuzzy Tail is waiting to meet you!

If you're looking for a kitten who does everything with enthusiasm, meet Ding Dong! This lovable little goofball is super affectionate, super cuddly, super playful, and super mischievous! Whatever Ding Dong does, he does it with his whole heart.

Ding Dong has never met a person he didn't want to cuddle or an adventure he didn't want to investigate. He's curious, fearless, and absolutely convinced that life is one big playground designed especially for him.

Read more about Ding Dong

But his greatest passion? FOOD! Ding Dong takes mealtime very seriously. If you're opening a can of cat food, don't be surprised if you suddenly feel tiny paws climbing up your back. Before you know it, Ding Dong will be perched on your shoulder, supervising the entire operation and wondering what's taking so long!

His very best friend is Bibbidi Mel, a sweet, gentle boy who provides the perfect balance to Ding Dong's larger-than-life personality. The two are wonderful buddies, and we'd love for them to find a forever home together. However, Ding Dong can also be adopted on his own.

If your home could use a little more laughter, a lot more love, and perhaps an unexpected kitten on your shoulder, Ding Dong is ready to ring your bell!

Kitten (3 months 28 days) · Male · Abyssinian / Mixed (short coat) · 7 mi from Chicago

Meet Bibbidi Mel – A Gentle Little Sweetheart!

Bibbidi Mel (or simply Mel to his friends) is a sweet, gentle little boy with a heart full of love and just a touch of shyness. He may take a little time to warm up, but once he feels comfortable, his affectionate nature begins to shine.

One of Mel's most adorable habits is the way he responds to being petted. Instead of demanding attention, he simply leans ever so slightly into your hand, as if quietly saying, "Oh, yes, I really like that. Please don't stop." It's such a small gesture, but absolutely heart-melting!

Read more about Bibbidi Mel

Mel has a few great passions in life: delicious food, climbing his cat tree, and watching birds through the window. He can happily spend ages observing the feathered visitors outside, dreaming of adventures while enjoying the comforts of home.

His very best friend is Ding Dong, a playful little fellow who brings out Mel's adventurous side. The two boys share a wonderful friendship, and we'd love to see them adopted together. However, Mel can also be adopted on his own into a loving, patient home where he'll have the time and encouragement to blossom at his own pace.

7. Kernel

Kitten (4 months 4 days) · Male · Domestic Short Hair / Tabby (short coat) · 22 mi from Chicago

Hi my name is Kernel! I was found all alone in a corn field after the corn had been cut down. A helpful person took me to animal control and from there I found my foster family. Ever since I popped up- I have been an a-maize-ing houseguest. Kernel is friendly and playful! An all around purrfect kitty with so much love and affection for his people. He loves to cuddle up on your lap and is a sucker for belly rubs. He is a young cat - around 16 weeks old and he needs another friendly cat waiting for him at his new home --or adopt a second available cat at the same time to keep him entertained! Kernel is a beautiful buff tabby and his little cherub face just melts your heart. He loves to play with all kinds of toys - and he even has a little catnip plush corn that he will bring with him to his forever home!

We encourage you to consider adopting kittens in pairs! There are several reasons why
Kernel
would do good with a friend, including:

-Two kittens keep each other entertained - they will play and get all their energy out on each other in time for snuggles with you!

-Having two kittens to play with each other prevents "I'm lonely and bored" behavioral issues.

-Watching two kittens wrestle is quite possibly the cutest thing you will ever see.

-The kittens will teach each other "how to cat" and learn to be more social with humans and people.

-You'll save two lives instead of one!

Nelly will be at the Darien Petsmart adoption event Saturday, October 31st from 11-2.

Perfection is Nelly's nick name. Nelly is a sweet, cuddly little black kitten who loves nothing more than getting attention from her people. She is pure perfection. Give her some pets and affection, and you’ll quickly hear her happy purrs start up! Nelly will sleep with you in bed all night. She is always ready to play. I often wake up in the morning to a pile of toys next to me that she had been gathering all night. She loves all people and all cats. We think it would be best for her to go to a home with a kitty companion whether that is adopting her with another kitten or having one already at home to play with. She is the last of her litter to be adopted out, and she misses playing with them. She has learned to play fetch with us when she is looking for playtime. She would be a great addition to any family. She would even likely be ok with a dog. She has never been introduced to one, I bet she would play and snuggle with a dog too. And she has the SOFTEST fur you will find. Seriously, this cat is perfect!

We encourage you to consider adopting kittens in pairs! There are several reasons why Nelly would do better with a sibling or friend, including:

I am best known for my calm demeanor and my perfect white handlebar mustache. My foster mom likes to joke that my mustache and grey hairs on my face make me look like a little old man.

I am the gentle giant of my siblings and ironically the least confident. But once you have my trust just give my checks some schritches or rub my belly and I will happily roll onto my back and give you kisses. I love to snuggle next to my foster mom.

I haven’t met a dog but I’ve gotten along with my foster family’s cats. I need to have a friend in the home with me.

19. Atlas

Adult (3 years 5 months) · Male · Bombay / Mixed (short coat) · 7 mi from Chicago

I'm Atlas, and I have been waiting for exactly this moment — the one where you find me.

I'm a big, handsome tuxedo boy, and I will tell you right away: I am not subtle about love. I don't make you wait for it, wonder about it, or earn it over months of careful patience. I just give it to you. Fully, warmly, without conditions.

Read more about Atlas

I know that might sound like the opposite of what you've been drawn to. But here's what I've learned about myself — I have a lot of love, and I want to share it with everyone in your world. The kids. The other cats. The quiet evenings on the couch. The busy Tuesday mornings. I fit into life rather than requiring life to rearrange itself around me, and there is something to be said for that kind of ease.

I am the cat who makes a full house feel complete.

If you already have cats at home, I'll win them over. If you have children, I'm already their best friend — I just haven't met them yet. If you've been waiting for a cat who will simply show up for you, every single day, without making you prove yourself first — that's what I do.

Some bonds ask you to be patient. Mine asks you to just let me in.

I'm Atlas. I already love you. I'm just waiting for you to come get me.

Some cats choose one person. Some choose everyone. The Sun shines on all.

Atlas is great with kids and other cats and will thrive in almost any loving home.

21. Saturday

Adult (3 years 3 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 6 mi from Chicago

Saturday is ready for her forever home, and this girl has SO much love to give!

It’s hard to believe that when we found Saturday in May 2026, she was dying. She had been trapped inside an abandoned building with no food, no water, and no way out. She was severely jaundiced from fatty liver disease, dehydrated, emaciated, and barely able to lift her head. Her survival was uncertain.

But Saturday chose life, and she has fought for it every single day since.

Read more about Saturday

Today, she is full of spunk, sweetness, and personality. She’s the kind of cat who makes you smile the moment you walk into the room. Saturday is a TOTAL lovebug who wants pets, pets, and more pets! She makes happy feet, rubs all over your legs, and asks for affection in the cutest ways.

And when we say this girl LOVES her humans, we mean it. Saturday sleeps with her foster mom EVERY single night and joins her for nap time, too. One of her favorite things is curling up right on her foster mom’s chest. She wants to be close to her person, soaking up all the love and attention she can get. If you're looking for a companion who will make you feel loved and needed, Saturday is your girl!

She’s also a huge fan of wand toys and has discovered that playing is her new favorite hobby. Her joy, energy, and resilience are honestly inspiring.

So, what about other cats, Saturday currently lives with a resident cat in her foster mom’s home, and the two do just fine together. They pretty much coexist, each doing their own thing without any drama. Based on what we’ve seen, Saturday could do well with a calm, non-dominant, easygoing cat who doesn't need to be in charge of the household. She would also be perfectly happy as an only cat, where she can soak up all the human attention her heart desires.

Saturday has survived the unimaginable. Now she deserves a home where she can finally exhale, stretch out, play, sleep on her favorite human’s chest, and be adored the way she always should have been.

Let's land this girl a home!If you’re interested in meeting and adopting Saturday, please fill out an application today. Your new favorite snuggle buddy might be waiting to meet you!

Adopting a cat with children in Chicago

Bring the whole family to meet the cat before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the cat behaves around children your kids' ages.

Teach children to let the cat come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the cat alone while it's eating, sleeping or using the litter box. Give the cat a high or quiet spot to retreat to.

Relaxed adult cats are often a better match for young children than kittens, which scratch and nip while they play.
