1. Wednesday Adams

Adult (11 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) · 23 mi from Country Club Heights

Hi, I'm Wednesday Adams. I'm a pretty black cat with eyes that almost cross. When I was a tiny kitten and all alone, some people rescued me out of a storm drain. I wasn't sure about them, but it turns out they were really nice, and they'd give me great kitty treats, catnip, and Churu yummies. So even though I'm still shy and would prefer a quiet home, I did discover that the right person has a lap that I love to sit on, and I love head and neck scratches (just don't touch my back, please).

Please contact the shelter at hancockcountyhumanesociety@gmail.com to make an appointment to meet me.

2. Mary Berry

Adult (5 years 11 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) · 23 mi from Country Club Heights

Hi, I'm Mary Berry. I was named after that sweet lady who has the baking show. I'm pretty sweet too. I have beautiful eyes and look like I'm wearing eyeliner.

I had a great home but my owner passed away, and the family couldn't keep me due to allergies. Now I'm looking for another sweet home for a purrfect girl like me.

My tummy is a little sensitive so I eat special kitty food to keep me feeling my best. It's not a big deal and I'm very healthy otherwise. Let's see what we can cook up together!

Please contact the shelter at hancockcountyhumanesociety@gmail.com to make an appointment to meet me.

3. Tahoe

Adult (2 years 5 months) · Male · Domestic Short Hair (medium coat) · 23 mi from Country Club Heights

Hi I'm Tahoe.

I am a gray and white male tabby about 2 years old.
I am a sweet guy looking for a warm, furever home. Don't let my name fool you, I like the warm, indoor life. It gets cold outside when you are a stray kitty. I don't know if I had a home and family once, but I know that life is much better living indoors with people who adore and worship you.

I am a purrfect gentleman looking for my furever family. Do you have room for a great guy like me? I know once you meet me, you will fall in love and we will live happily furever. Hurry, I'm waiting.

6. Pie

Kitten · Female · Domestic Long Hair / Mixed · 44 mi from Country Club Heights

Meet Pie! She’s a beautiful half grown longhaired kitten with a thick black and white coat, and she’s every bit as sweet as her name.Pie was found in the woods by a deer hunter, nowhere near any houses. When he stepped out of his truck, she came running straight to him and climbed right up to his neck. She was starving and filthy. At intake she was at least 5 months old but weighed only 2 lbs 12 oz, when she should be around 5 lbs or more. Her fluffy coat hides it, but when you pet her, all you feel is bones. Our vet found that she broke her back foot at some point when she was younger. It has mostly healed, so there isn’t much to be done, and she will probably always have a limp.

Otherwise he said she looks OK and just needs to be fed slowly to regain her weight. Her ears are perfectly clean and she had no fleas. Her white fur was very dirty from trying to survive on her own, but we suspect she lived indoors at one time. She is not microchipped, and no one came forward looking for her.Pie is VERY people oriented and friendly. She was brave enough to ask for help, and now she just wants to be near her people. She’s sure to be a lap cat, and she deserves a home where she can finally relax, fill out, and be loved. Her limp doesn’t seem to slow her down.If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application. 7. Cider

Kitten · Male · Domestic Long Hair / Mixed · 44 mi from Country Club Heights

Meet Cider, a kitten with a purr that's way louder than it has any right to be.Cider was found as a sick, tiny stray. A rough case of ringworm cost him his long hair, which is why he looks like a shorthair in his pictures. He's fully cleared now, and the hair is slowly growing back. Whether he ends up fully fluffy again, only time will tell, but he's working on it.He's playful and always looking for attention. He's not a big cuddle bug yet, since he couldn't be held much while he was dealing with the ringworm. Our guess is that will change, because he keeps asking for the attention. If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application.

12. Primrose

Adult · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed · 44 mi from Country Club Heights

Primrose was adopted out several years ago. She was recently found as a very skinny stray with a lot of hair loss and fleas. She’s back in our care and will be up for adoption. She has always lived with a dog, but no other cats, and she’s lived with school-age children. Because of this, she does not like other cats and would do best in a home without them.If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application. 15. Snickers

Adult · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed · 44 mi from Country Club Heights

Meet Snickers — you might also see her listed as Sarabi, the name we knew her by before her adoption. She's a hefty, 6-year-old spayed girl with a lot of presence. We had her since she was a kitten until her adoption last year, and now she's back with us, currently staying in a loving foster home while she waits for her next family (weighed in around 15 pounds at her last adoption).Snickers isn't a lap cat, but she likes to be near her people — she'd rather curl up beside you or share the room than climb into your lap. Her foster mom says she'll stretch out right next to her on the couch, or claim the foot rest the second it's up.She's got a playful side too, especially when there's a bug to hunt down around the house, and she's settled in well with the puppy in her foster home — these days the two of them chase each other around.

Read more about Snickers

She was also comfortable being around dogs during her time at the rescue.Other cats are a bit more of a mixed bag for her. She got along fine with most of the cats here at the rescue, though she wasn't especially friendly with all of them, and there were a few she just didn't care for. Her previous owner tried introducing another cat, and Snickers wasn't open to it — though that introduction didn't get much of a chance before it was called off. With some patience and a cat willing to give her space, she may still do okay in a multi-cat home. She's easy to please on the small stuff. Any litter works for her, though her foster mom has found she seems to prefer clumping sand since it's gentler on her paws. She's currently eating 4Health grain-free, and she's a nibbler who grazes through her food rather than eating it all in one go.If you're looking for a substantial, steady girl who wants company without needing constant attention, Snickers would love to meet you. Her adoption fee is $75.If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application. How to adopt from Hancock County Humane Society

An application is placed after a visit to the shelter to meet the pet. It is researched by a volunteer then must have the approval of two other Board members. An adopter agrees to spay/neuter any pet that isn't yet old enough to be fixed at time of adoption, and also agrees to return the pet to us at any time if for any reason they can no longer care for it. Regular Adoption Fee (kittens or adult cats less than 5 years old): $80. Two can be adopted together for a total fee of $120. Senior citizens (55 or older) may adopt a pet for a special fee of $50. Adult cats 5 years or older: $50. Special-needs cats (including FIV- or FeLeuk-positive): $25.

Adopting a cat in Country Club Heights

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
