3. Mama Hellen

Adult (2 years 2 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Mama Hellen is a total sweetheart, and she went from hiding behind the toilet to sprawling on the couch, napping next to her people, and leaning into cheek scratches. She loves catching rays in whatever sun spots she can find.

She is calm, quiet, and very well-behaved. She is just starting to work up the courage to swat at some toys. She is the most gentle girl, ready for someone to give her a chance.

Mama Hellen is still very cautious with new people and doesn't like being approached from above or too quickly, and does not like to be picked up. She does not like loud noises, so a quieter home would be best. She is a very independent girl who will come to you when she wants some scratches.

4. Shaggy

Adult (3 years) · Male · Domestic Medium Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Shaggy is such a sweet boy! He’s a pretty independent guy and generally spends most of the day doing his own thing. He loves to find a quiet spot to hide, but enjoys stealing the spotlight on a work call as well! He appreciates the company of people and often comes when called. If you pat the couch he will hop right up and wait expectantly for pets! He has absolutely no sense of personal space and will happily climb all over you on the couch, but is a respectful king at night and will sleep politely at the foot of the bed. He has a strong preference for catnip toys and is very treat motivated! He would probably do best with someone who works from home or is hybrid, as we get the sense he likes having people around.

Shaggy was rescued with dental issues and is in need of surgery. We would be thrilled for a potential adopter to provide a larger adoption donation (between $250 and $400 total) and/or assistance crowdsourcing funds towards their necessary vet bills if possible.

6. Sid

Adult (2 years 1 month) · Male · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Meet Sid: the sweetest, most affectionate orange boy (with brains to match!)

Sid spent his early days exploring the great outdoors, and now he’s discovering all the good things indoor life has to offer. Case in point: he only recently met his first Churu. A week ago he wasn’t sure what to do with one; now he’s a certified fan. Similarly, he also just discovered what a reflection in the mirror is. His paws are still getting used to the soft life, and he’s loving every minute of it.

Read more about Sid

Sid takes a few days to get to know you, but once he does, he’ll be your loyal friend. He’ll come running when you call for him, greet you with VERY enthusiastic head bumps, and never say no to a good chin scratch. He appreciates the little things. Mealtime and treats are definitely the highlights of his day.

Sid is also still learning how to play. Strings and toy mice haven’t quite clicked for him yet. We think this street-smart boy is used to the real thing and isn’t fooled by imitations! He’s curious and clever, though, so we have a feeling that the right person (and the right toy) will unlock his playful side. Maybe you’ll be the one to discover his favorite game.

He’s the perfect balance of cuddly and independent. Sid is happy to sit quietly by your side for hours, but he’s just as content entertaining himself while you’re busy. He still doesn’t like to be held though – some conditioning will be necessary if you want to pick him up. He’s also a very tidy gentleman. He takes his grooming seriously and has excellent litter box manners.

If you’re looking for a loving, grateful companion who will make every day a little brighter, Sid is ready to meet you!

This cat needs to be adopted with a friend -- applications for them as a single cat will not be answered.

7. Machi Koro

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Male · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Machi Koro is the kitty of your dreams. He has had a tough start to life, so is extra ready for love, snuggles & belly rubs. He is a little uncertain because of his early experiences, but after getting comfortable with you, he will curl up beside you when you lay down, roll and flop all over the couch, bed, or your lap, purring the loudest purr. He also does the cutest thing: if you take your hand away from giving him scratches, he reaches out with both paws and gently puts your hand back where it was. He is a charmer with the softest heart, roundest eyes, and knows just how to make your heart melt! You will not regret giving Machi Koro a fresh start.

Pacino is a sweet, curious, and playful black kitten who loves being around people and exploring the world around him! Pacino enjoys following you from room to room, looking for pets, attention, and his favorite cheek rubs. As a rescue, he can be a little shy at first, but he warms up quickly and loves spending time with his people, whether he's enjoying some lap time or keeping you entertained with his kitten antics.

Read more about Pacino

Pacino is full of energy and loves chasing balls, pouncing on wand toys, and racing around with other feline friends. He's also a curious little observer who enjoys watching birds, bugs, and the world go by from a cozy window perch. He also loves treats! This food-motivated boy might even be a good candidate for learning commands, walking on a leash, or exploring in a cat backpack.

Due to Pacino's young age and high energy level, he needs to go to a home with another young, playful cat who can keep up with him. He would love to be adopted with his foster friend, Rocco! Life with Pacino will bring plenty of playtime, a little mischief, and a sweet little shadow who gets more affectionate as he gets to know you.

14. Rocco

Young (6 months) · Male · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 4 mi from New York City

Rocco is a sweet, affectionate, and outgoing teen kitten who loves being around people. He has an almost dog-like loyalty, greeting you at the door every time you come home with a loud purr and plenty of enthusiasm. He loves attention and will eagerly climb into your lap, nuzzle your face when you pick him up, and follow your hand with his head to make sure the pets don't stop. He's also wonderfully confident and friendly with new people, greeting visitors without a hint of shyness.

Read more about Rocco

Rocco is a very energetic and playful kitten, especially when toys or treats are involved. This boy has some serious energy! He'll leap 5 feet high to catch a wand toy, and comes running whenever he thinks there might be treats. When mealtime rolls around, he has the sweetest little meow to remind you that he's waiting.

Rocco loves other cats and spends his days playing with his foster buddy, Pacino. He'd thrive in a home with another active cat who can match his enthusiasm, though a home where he'd be the only cat might be considered if it's the right fit. He and Pacino would make a wonderful pair, but they can also be adopted separately. Rocco approaches just about everything with enthusiasm, whether it's meeting someone new, chasing a toy, or settling into your lap for some affection.

16. Moniker

Adult (1 year 1 month) · Male · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

This is Moniker. He’s about a year old, sleek black with a clean white tuxedo chest and four white socks. His foster says he has been one of the sweetest, most genuinely affectionate cats they've ever lived with.

Read more about Moniker

From his very first day in their apartment, he didn’t hide under furniture or act cautious. He walked right out, climbed into his foster's lap, and melted. He is a pure cuddle cat who simply loves physical contact. At night, he insists on sleeping glued to his person—usually tucked against their arm or resting right beside their cheek. A few days ago, when his foster came down with a bad cold, he took it upon himself to nurse them: he curled up right over their chest, burying his face near their heart to keep them warm the entire night.

Because he loves company so much, his foster was initially worried he might have separation anxiety when they left for work. But every time they check the camera, he is simply fast asleep, completely calm and content until they get back.

A few things that make him so special:

His "bilingual" double meow: His foster talks to him in Korean, where the word for a cat's meow is two syllables (ya-ong). He started mimicking the rhythm, so instead of a single meow, he greets you with an intentional double meow ("meow-meow").

The shedding mystery: His foster prepared themselves for black fur everywhere, but he barely sheds at all. His cat bed is bright yellow and their duvet is beige, yet even on light fabric, finding more than a couple of stray hairs is almost impossible.

Agile and playful: He is remarkably fast and has an impressive vertical jump when chasing feather toys.

The nighttime routine: Like most young cats, he can get a burst of 5 AM zoomies if he has leftover energy. The fix has been simple: a solid 20-minute play session an hour before bed followed by dinner. Once he eats, he crashes out around 10 or 11 PM and sleeps straight through until morning.

Gentle temperament: He has never once hissed or swiped. Even when his foster had to give him oral medication—which usually turns into a battle with most cats—he let them open his mouth without biting or struggling.

He eats well, drinks lots of water (he just appreciates having fresh bowls), and keeps himself impeccably clean.

Moniker would thrive with someone who genuinely loves affectionate cats and wants a loyal little companion glued by their side.

This cat can be adopted with a friend or as a single cat.

This beautiful girl has so much love to give and would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a kitty who genuinely enjoys human interaction. 18. Soca

Adult (4 years 1 month) · Female · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Soca is the sweetest large angel!!

She is a very chill, 4-year-old gal who wants to play (mostly while laying) and wants to curl up near you all day! She has a big purr that starts up the second you pet her or start talking to her. She is so goofy because if you pet her face too long, she starts to grab your arm to wrestle and give love bites. We think she gets quickly overstimulated which is why the big loving purr turns to attack mode.

She sleeps extremely deeply and twitches a lot in her sleep. When she wakes up, she meows loudly until she figures out where you are. Then it is back to sleep!

Read more about Soca

She loves treats and is super food motivated. She loves Churu, dry treats, fancy feast, and some dry food (the cheap tasty stuff!).

19. Chips

Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Domestic Short Hair · 4 mi from New York City

Chips is a fun, loving, chonky 1-year old kitten! She does it all: non-stop play, holds your hand, pats you, flops, sleeps on your lap, you name it! This is the perfect calico girl looking for her perfect home.

Chips would be happy for playtime to go on forever. Give her a kick toy and she’ll kick it (or any toy really). Give her a wand toy and she’ll jump around chasing it. Don’t even get me started with the laser pointer (but do get Chips started, she loves it!).

Read more about Chips

The only thing Chips loves more than play is spending almost all of her time with her humans. She does like to find a hidey hole and take a good nap when her people aren’t around. But get ready to give her endless pats, carry her around, or give her your lap for an hour long nap. Have you ever had your hand held by a cat? It’s pretty darn cute!

Chips does not want to share her beloved humans or space with other cats, so she will need to be a solo kitty. But don’t worry, Chips is more than enough cat to keep you busy! We don’t know how she does with kids.

This super-smart, beautiful girl knows exactly how to get what she wants from her humans, whether that’s treats, play time, or pats. So please let us know you’d like to meet her; she can’t wait to meet you!

This cat would prefer to be adopted alone and be the only cat in the home.

Meet Backwards Oreo (aka Oero!). This sweet girl came to us in rough shape, as an older dumped pet who clearly spent way too long fending for herself outside. She's a very chill girl, but does sometimes get a tiny burst of energy (especially if there's catnip involved!). Banjo is a sweet, affectionate girl who's ready to be your shadow. She'll greet you at the door with meows and follow you from room to room until you give her the pets she so clearly deserves. And she loves her pets: she'll ploop onto her side, then flip over to offer you the other side.

When it's playtime, wand toys are her thing. Move one fast and watch her chase it. She's also easy to pick up, so cuddles are always an option.

If you want a sweet, chatty buddy to come home to, Banjo's your girl.

This cat would prefer to be adopted alone and be the only cat in the home.

Potential Pet-parents fill out an Adoption Application, we review the application, call the applicant, schedule a time for them to visit our cats. We check their references, call their veterinarian, and verify that their backup person who would take the cats if something happened to the adopter is on board. Then a Foster Agreement is completed. Adopting a cat in New York City

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
