1. Scuttle

Young (2 years) · Male · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 8 mi from Nahant

Scuttle is a two year old neutered male cat, looking for his home. Here’s what his foster volunteer says about him:

How would you describe the cat's general personality?

Scuttle is an affectionate, playful, and energetic little guy! He loves following his human around and will sometimes lie right on your feet, making it impossible to walk. He’s also quite vocal and loves to meow at you. He’s curious about everything and wants to play with just about anything he comes across.

Does the cat enjoy being pet? If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?

Read more about Scuttle

Scuttle absolutely loves being petted, especially on the back of his head and under his chin. He may try to grab your hand with his paws when you touch his belly, so he seems to prefer head and chin pets over belly rubs!

Does the cat come on your lap?

Yes! Scuttle loves lying on your lap. When relaxing on the couch, he also likes to snuggle up right against your body. He’s a very affectionate and cuddly companion.

Does the cat like to be held?

Scuttle doesn’t seem very used to being held yet. He stays calm when picked up, but usually jumps down after a second or two.

Does the cat sleep in your bed?

Not sure yet! We haven’t reached the stage of sharing a bed, so I don’t know if he’ll sleep with me at night.

Does the cat seek your attention?

Yes! Scuttle is very vocal and will keep meowing until I make eye contact with him or respond to him. He definitely likes to communicate with his humans!

Does the cat like to play?

Scuttle absolutely loves to play, and solo toys are his specialty! He plays with them very well and loves to run around. He’s still learning how to play with wand toys and often tries to take the wand away so he can play with it by himself. He’s also still figuring out puzzle toys and sometimes has trouble finding the hidden treats.

What are the cat's favorite games and toys?

Scuttle’s favorite toy is his catnip pillow! He also likes to hide his favorite toys and take them out again whenever he feels like playing.

How vocal is the cat? What kinds of sounds does the cat make?

Scuttle is quite vocal! When he’s awake and not resting, he’ll often meow here and there, especially when people are walking around. He also loves meowing in the kitchen, possibly because he associates it with mealtime.

Scuttle makes all kinds of sounds! He meows, purrs, and makes little chirping or trilling sounds.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher? If no, please explain.

Scuttle mostly uses his scratching posts and scratchers. He tried scratching a cabinet door once, but stopped when he realized he didn’t like the texture. So far, he seems to prefer his designated scratching spots!

Does the cat always use the litter box? If no, please explain.

Scuttle uses his litter box very well now and does a great job covering his waste. When he first arrived at his foster home, he pooped on a bath mat and urinated on the sofa. This may have been related to the stress of adjusting to a new environment. Since settling in and getting more comfortable, he has been using his litter box well.

What food and frequency is the cat currently eating?

Scuttle eats four meals of wet food a day, about half a can per meal. His wet food includes Fussie Cat chicken and turkey shreds, RAWZ chicken and turkey shreds, and Tiki Cat chicken mousse. He also has a separate bowl of RAWZ chicken recipe dry food, with about 1–2 tablespoons available to help make sure he gets enough to eat.

Is the cat picky about food?

Scuttle is not picky at all! He happily eats all the food offered to him and always finishes his meals.

What is the cat's favorite treat?

I’ve tried Greenies, Temptations Party Mix, and Churu treats, and Scuttle likes all of them!

What medication is the cat on, and how is it administered?

No.

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?

2. Bean & Momo

Young (11 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 8 mi from Nahant

Bean and Momo are a 1-year-old bonded sister and brother, up to date on vaccinations WHO MUST BE ADOPTED TOGETHER. Here’s what their foster volunteers say about them:

How would you describe the cats' general personalities? Bean and Momo balance each other out wonderfully. Bean is quieter and more polite, while Momo is the rambunctious, adventurous, and slightly bratty brother. Both are shy and skittish with humans initially, but curious and motivated by food/treats. Bean is slightly more approachable for gentle pets if approached slowly, while Momo loves being near the action, lounging on the couch just out of reach, and playing.

Read more about Bean & Momo

Do the cats enjoy being pet? They are both learning to enjoy pets as they build trust. Bean warms up and purrs (with an oddly deep purr for a tiny cat) when relaxed. Momo has recently accepted pets down his back or head/eyebrow scritches, especially when relaxed near another cat or distracted by treats, though he can still be hesitant with approaching hands.

If yes, on what parts of their bodies do they like to be pet? Bean likes pets on her face, head, and back (along with occasional chin/chest scratches). Momo enjoys scritches on the back of his head, eyebrows, and down his back.

Are there any parts of their bodies that they do NOT like being touched? Neither likes sudden movements or being grabbed. Bean will sometimes dart off with a full-body pet. Momo is protective of his personal space when cornered or startled and prefers light, respectful touches.

Do the cats come on your lap? Both will crawl onto your lap for high-value treats (like Greenies or Churus), but they usually move away once the treats are gone.

Do the cats like to be held? No. Neither cat likes being picked up or held; Bean kicks to escape after a few seconds, and Momo gets distressed.

Do the cats sleep in your bed? They are generally kept in a separate room overnight due to young-cat nighttime zoomies. During the day, Bean occasionally naps in the bed if the sun is right, and Momo will venture onto the bed if he thinks everyone is asleep.

Do the cats seek your attention? They seek attention primarily around routine treat times! Momo will run over and look up at you on the couch for evening snacks. Bean tag-alongs quietly with her brother and other resident cats.

Do the cats like to play? Absolutely! They love playing together—chasing each other around the house, tag-teaming rolling toys, and wrestling. They both enjoy laser pointers, feather wands, fake rodents, springs, and electric toys.

What are their favorite games, toys, and scratchers? Laser pointers, plastic springs, feather wands, coir and cardboard scratchers, and playing chase with each other.

How vocal are the cats and what sounds do they make? Very quiet overall. Bean squeaks sadly when everyone is asleep and she wants to play. Momo will occasionally make soft whines if separated or bored. Neither meows frequently.

Do the cats always use the litter box? Yes, 100% reliable! However, both are extremely vigorous diggers, so high-walled litter boxes and a good vacuum are recommended.

What food, frequency, and treats do they enjoy? They eat scheduled breakfast and dinner meals wet/dry food without being picky. Greenies and Churus are their absolute favorite treats (Momo also loves cooked chicken, though he gets possessive with it!). Bean eats patiently, while Momo can be more eager.

Have either of the cats shown swatting, scratching, or biting behaviors?

Bean: Extremely gentle and peaceful. She has never scratched, bitten, or attacked anyone (except playful wrestling with Momo). She accepts treats very softly, occasionally taking a gentle nibble if fingers smell like treat dust.

Momo: Was defensive/swatty when he first arrived, but has improved significantly with socialization training. He now swats much less (mainly if cornered or startled), usually with claws retracted or just trying to reach a treat. He has never bitten or broken skin.

Backstory:

Chazzy and Ollie are a gentle, bonded pair of 10-year-old brothers who are looking for a calm, loving forever home to spend their golden years. These handsome boys (Ollie sports a subtle white patch while Chazzy is solid black) joined Black Cat Rescue after losing their longtime owner, and they have been working hard to decompress in their foster home. While they are quite shy with new people, they are sweet-natured gentlemen who find immense comfort in each other’s presence and are slowly learning that the world is a safe, kind place.

Read more about Chazzy & Ollie

Almost 10 years ago Chazzy and Ollie were trapped outside along with their two sisters. The litter was on their own and getting a little too old (6 months or so) to compete with younger, more socialized kittens that year. The amazing woman who rescued them while working to help all of the cats in her community, decided to adopt all four of them. Sadly, Chazzy, Ollie and their sisters recently lost their lifelong person. Chazzy and Ollie are now looking for another amazing person to take a chance on two shy guys.

How would you describe the cat's general personality?

Chazzy and Ollie are very calm, enjoying each other's company in a quiet home. They prefer to stay in their hiding nooks when humans are around, but are slowly showing more personality in foster care as they play with each other when left to themselves. They have great manners in eating and using the litter box, and do not mind being pet every so often.

Does the cat enjoy being pet?

Chazzy and Ollie do not mind being pet, but they do not seek it out either. They will let their foster pet them from inside their cat tree and like being rewarded with treats!

If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet?

For now, they have mostly been getting pets on their backs and across their body, though they have also begun to warm up to scritches near their neck as well.

Does the cat come on your lap?

No

Does the cat like to be held?

No

Does the cat sleep in your bed?

No (they have a separate room)

Does the cat seek your attention?

No – Chazzy and Ollie mainly stay to themselves, but with patience, they are slowly becoming more curious about humans. They will pop out of their hiding holes and sit in the room to observe their foster care volunteer from a distance.

Does the cat like to play? What are the cat's favorite games and toys?

Chazzy and Ollie like to play with little mouse and ball toys by themselves, and the toys are often thrown about in various places from day to day. They do not play as much with their foster, and are not particularly interested in interactive games like string toys.

How vocal is the cat? What kinds of sounds does the cat make?

Both cats are not super vocal and have not meowed much.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher? If no, please explain.

Neither cat has clawed at any furniture. They have a scratching post available to them, but their foster volunteer has not witnessed them use it.

Does the cat always use the litter box?

Chazzy and Ollie are great at using the litter box consistently and have great litter box manners.

What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? Is the cat picky about food? What is the cat's favorite treat?

Chazzy and Ollie require a specific prescription urinary diet to stay healthy, and both boys eat Rx urinary care diet to avoid urinary blockages. They have one can of wet food every day – half in the morning and half at night. They also free feed kibble and treats each day as well. Both have been very good about eating and drinking water consistently.

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?

No

9. Jonesy

Adult (9 years) · Female · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 37 mi from Nahant

Hi, I’m Jonesy. ❤️

I may be a little shy when we first meet, but underneath that cautious exterior is a very sweet girl who truly loves people. Once I feel comfortable, I’m happiest when my humans are nearby. I’ll look for you, enjoy your attention, and simply be happy knowing I have someone to call my own.

I’m a senior lady, and at this stage of my life, I’m not looking for anything complicated. I’m looking for a quiet, peaceful home where I can settle in, feel safe, and be loved. A soft place to nap, a kind person to keep me company, and a little patience while I find my confidence would mean the world to me.

Read more about Jonesy

I think I could do well with respectful children who understand that an older girl like me may need a little time to warm up. I would prefer to be the only pet in the home, without dogs or cats, so I can enjoy all the attention myself.

I’ve got so much love left to give. I just need someone willing to see past my initial shyness and give a sweet senior girl the chance to spend her golden years knowing what it feels like to truly belong. Maybe that someone is you.

10. Gin Gin

Young (10 months) · Female · Domestic Short Hair (short coat) · 37 mi from Nahant

Gin Gin is a beautiful 8-month-old girl with a gentle soul and a heart that's just waiting to bloom. While she can be a little shy when meeting new people, beneath that quiet exterior is a very sweet and affectionate kitten who simply needs a little time to feel safe.

Once Gin Gin settles into her new surroundings and learns to trust, her loving personality begins to shine. She enjoys affection and companionship, and while it's still too soon to know whether she'll become a full-time lap cat, we have a feeling she may continue to surprise us as her confidence grows.

Read more about Gin Gin

Gin Gin takes great comfort in the company of other cats and would thrive in a home with at least one friendly feline companion. Having another cat around helps her feel secure and gives her a role model as she adjusts to new situations.

Her ideal home would be a calm, quiet environment with patient adopters who understand that some cats need a little extra time to come out of their shells. Older children who can respect her space and allow her to approach on her own terms would be a wonderful fit.

While she hasn't met dogs yet, we believe she would likely do well with a calm, respectful dog who would give her the time she needs to adjust.

Gin Gin may not be the cat who rushes to greet you at the door on day one, but for the person willing to be patient, the reward will be watching a shy kitten blossom into a devoted companion. If you have a quiet home, a kind heart, and perhaps a feline friend waiting for a new buddy, Gin Gin may be the perfect addition to your family.

Adopting a cat in Nahant

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
