1. Oscar

Young (1 year) · Male · Domestic Medium Hair / Mixed (medium coat) · 30 mi from Lexington

Oscar was found trapped in a garbage bend. He had been there for awhile because you see all his bones. Since being in rescue he has gained his weight back and made himself right at home. He loves sleeping on my bed and being rubbed. I don’t think his former home ever played with him because he was confused by cat toys. He is gorgeous medium hair blue cat with the most mesmerizing yellow eyes. He is tall and sleek…could have been a super model. Although he is ok with my other cats I think he would prefer to be the only one. He gets a little bossy with my older cats but really liked the foster kitten Presley. He has been completely vetted and combo tested negative. He is believed to be around 1-2 yrs old.

2. Maya

Young (11 months) · Female · Tuxedo / Mixed (short coat) · 30 mi from Lexington

Maya was born into a feral community in our neighborhood. When she was 8 months old, I was able to capture her after realizing she was blind. She only weighed 4 and a half pounds at that time. She has been with us for about 2 months. During this time, she has had her left eye removed, has been spayed, and now weighs a little over 6 pounds. She has very little sight in her right eye.

Read more about Maya

However, Maya is amazing. She has mapped my entire house using just touch, sound, and her whiskers. She does not like to be picked up or carried because it disorients her but loves to be on the chair with you and to be petted, sometimes sitting in your lap. She knows exactly where her food, water, and litter are. She has never gone outside of her litter box. She loves to play with toys. I have several that either smell of catnip or make noise so she can easily find them. She is a beautiful black and white cat with a very loving nature. She gets along well with my dogs, even playing with them. She is very gentle and has not scratched me in play. She has scratched me when I pick her up because it confuses her. She is so smart and is so happy for all she has been through. Just a wonderful cat.

3. Presley

Kitten (4 months 25 days) · Female · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 30 mi from Lexington

Presley is a beautiful kitten born in our rescue. Her mom was rescued from the euthanasia list at the shelter before her birth. She is spunky, curious and extremely outgoing. She loves helping me make my bed every morning. At night she tries to distract me from reading my book by peeping over the top, biting the corner of the the book or just blocking out the book with her whole body. She does great with other cats and doesn’t mind my grouchy Pekingese. She is very playful and friendly. She purrs loudly whenever gets rubbed especially her belly. Her markings are stunning with her leopard spotted belly. Her birthday is May 16th and she has already had all her vaccines. She does great with her litter box and loves her cat tree. 10. Charlotte

Senior (12 years) · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) · 32 mi from Lexington

Char/Meck Animal Control was notified by a couple that a cat had shown up at their house. She was scanned for a microchip that came back to the SCHS...from 2015! Unregistered, we have CHARLOTTE back and have caught her up on her vetting. She is a total sweetheart: calm, friendly, but with not many teeth. This, however, does not stop her from eating and she enjoys her meals. She is also four-paw declawed, but doesn't hold that against us. She will make a wonderful lap cat!

Adopting a cat in Lexington

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
