2. Gardi

Senior · Female · Domestic Medium Hair · 97 mi from Madison

Meet Gardi: Tiny Meow, Big Appetite for Life 11-year-old Gardi carries herself with a quiet elegance…until treat time arrives. Then she turns into a joyful little prancer, dancing around to remind you that evening snacks are a very serious matter. As the household’s self-appointed mealtime ambassador, Gardi sprints down the hall at breakfast with the speed of a kitten, her tiny meow chiming in as if to say, “Don’t forget, girls need breakfast too!” She’s a delight to watch, whether batting around her favorite toy, stretching tall on the cat tree, or gazing dreamily out the window at the birds.Gardi is a tender soul who blossoms with a bit of patience.

Once she’s settled in, she’ll curl beside you, purr contentedly, and soak up gentle pets. She’s independent enough to be fine while you’re at work, but come dinnertime she’ll be right there waiting with love (and probably a reminder about those treats). This sweet girl has shown resilience too; after bladder stones were surgically removed, she’s thriving on her prescription urinary diet and just needs routine checkups to keep her shining.Gardi has lived happily with her sister Amber and other cats, but she could also be your cherished one-and-only. What she dreams of most is a quiet home with adults or older, respectful children who understand a cat’s cues, and who will treasure her mix of grace, silliness, and purrs.Could Gardi be the gentle queen who prances into your heart? 3. Kitty

Senior · Female · Domestic Medium Hair · 97 mi from Madison

Meet Kitty! She may not be the cat who greets every stranger at the door, but give this lovely girl a little time and patience, and you'll discover a devoted companion with a heart full of love. With her sweet face, expressive personality, and endearing quirks, Kitty is the kind of cat who forms deep bonds with her people. Once you've earned her trust, she'll happily curl up in your lap for hours while you watch TV, scroll on your phone, or simply enjoy a quiet evening together.Kitty is looking for a calm, peaceful home where she can be the one and only pet. She has no interest in sharing the spotlight with other cats and would much rather be the center of your world.

Read more about Kitty

Because she can be sensitive to noise and too much activity, an adults-only home—or one with older, respectful children—would suit her best. Kitty enjoys having her humans nearby but doesn't need constant attention. What she does need is a patient family willing to give her the time she needs to settle in and feel safe. Once she does, her affectionate side shines beautifully.A true couch potato at heart, Kitty has perfected the art of eating, napping, and lounging in maximum comfort. Her heated mat is one of her favorite places to relax, and mealtime is always an exciting event. In fact, Kitty becomes quite the chatterbox when food is involved, enthusiastically "screaming" at her foster family as dinner is prepared. The funniest part? Before she'll actually start eating, she insists on collecting a few pets first. Kitty also enjoys hunting fishing pole toys and batting around catnip pillows, though she tends to tire out quickly. She loves lap time but can become overstimulated if petted too much, making her a wonderfully quirky companion who appreciates people willing to learn her unique rhythm.Kitty has been through a lot of changes recently after being transferred into foster care when the elderly couple who loved her could no longer provide the care she needed. Her foster family has been delighted to watch her slowly gain confidence and come out of her shell. She does have some bald patches from overgrooming, likely related to anxiety or a possible food sensitivity, but they aren't causing her any medical issues. As she continues to feel secure and settled, there's every chance this habit may improve. Beneath her cautious exterior is a sweet, loving girl who simply needs someone willing to meet her where she is. Give Kitty the patience she deserves, and before long you'll have a loyal lap warmer, a mealtime commentator, and a best friend for life. 8. Figgie

Senior · Female · Domestic Long Hair / Mixed · 92 mi from Madison

Sweet Figgie is a lovely senior girl who is looking for a home to live comfortably in her golden years. Figgie has hyperthyroidism, and is showing signs of early kidney failure. Figgie's foster home has this to say about her: "Figgie is a very sweet, spirited girl. She loves people and would do anything to sit on your lap and get pets. She can be very demanding - she has no problem getting vocal to let you know she's ready for attention. She likes her face and cheeks rubbed, she's unbelievably soft - like a plush toy. I think her estimated age was 16 years? I actually can't believe that, she's more active than one of my cats who is 12! So definitely lots of life left in her despite her age.

She is not a big fan of my other cats and would possibly do better somewhere where she can be the star of the show :) She'll follow us around constantly, she's definitely a little clingy and would benefit from having someone who can give her LOTS of attention. 11. Tigerclaw

Senior · Male · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed · 92 mi from Madison

Tigerclaw is a curious, chatty guy who would love a home to explore and snuggle, where he can be with other FeLV+ kitties, or by himself. Tigerclaw loves to be held and will snuggle right up against your chest and lay there for as long as you'll let him! Tigerclaw may do well with other kitties, however Tigerclaw is positive for FeLV and would need to go to a home without other kitties, or with cats who are also positive for FeLV. FeLV can be passed from cat to cat through saliva, so any mutual grooming, nose to nose contact, and shared water bowls can become sources of infection. It cannot be transmitted to people.

Adopting a senior cat in Madison

Older cats are usually calm, affectionate and happy with a quiet home, which makes them a good match for older adults and first-time cat owners.

Ask the rescue about the cat's health and vet history. Many rescues charge less to adopt a senior cat.

Cats often live into their late teens, so a senior cat can be part of your family for years.
