2. Avocado
Senior (11 years) · Female · Siamese / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

Hi there! My name is Avocado,
As a senior lady, I've mastered the art of being the perfect companion. My favorite place is right beside my people, soaking up affection and leaning into every pet with pure happiness.
I've got a wonderful purr that starts up the moment you show me a little love, and I don't mind being picked up and cuddled, either. I'm an easygoing, even-tempered girl who believes life is best enjoyed from a cozy couch or comfy lap. While some cats like excitement, I prefer quiet moments, gentle attention, and plenty of relaxation. I enjoy being brushed and actually need regular brushing to help me keep my fur soft and silky.

3. Artichoke
Senior (8 years) · Female · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

Hi, I'm Artichoke,
Losing my person and everything familiar was a lot for a senior girl like me. There was no plan for me or my two kitty friends so a relative was regularly coming in to feed us for a while. Because I would hide, they thought I wasn't very affectionate.
Once the folks at the shelter got to know me, they discovered the real me. I'm actually one of the sweetest cats you'll ever meet! I love being petted, loved on, and fussed over. The more attention I get, the happier I am. I'll gladly settle in beside you and soak up every bit of affection you have to offer.

Dolly - a rare breed of Swamp dog - was another rescue plea. We got the, “do you guys take cats?” And before I could even reply and say no her story and picture came through and we were done for. Dollys’ owner had passed away, she was covered head to toe in mats, and the shelter discovered she was also diabetic. She needed out and we said sign us up.

8. Sieanna
Adult (3 years 1 month) · Female · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

Hi, I’m Sienna.
Life hasn’t always been easy for me. I came from a home with far too many cats, and with so many furry faces around, I often got overlooked. Because of that, all this one-on-one attention is still pretty new to me. I want to love it, and every day I’m learning that being noticed can be a wonderful thing. My very favorite thing is having my chin and cheeks gently stroked. When those soft pets start, you can almost see me relax and lean into them. It’s my special way of saying, “Yes, please, more of that!”
Read more about Sieanna
I’m a sweet girl with a sensitive side. I usually prefer to eat when no one is watching, but I do have one exception: Churu treats served on a long-handled spoon. Something about that arrangement makes me brave enough to enjoy a snack with company.
What I need most is a patient person who understands that trust takes time. I’m already discovering how nice it feels to be cherished, and with a little love and understanding, I know I’ll continue to blossom into the happy, confident cat I was always meant to be.

9. Forte
Senior (10 years 1 month) · Male · Domestic Long Hair / Mixed (long coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

Hello, I'm Forte.
For the first 10 years of my life, I had a home and a person who loved me. When my owner became very sick, there was no plan for what would happen to me, and suddenly I found myself at a shelter. As you can imagine, that was a big change for a guy like me, and sometimes I still feel a little overwhelmed by it all.
Read more about Forte
The best way to win me over is with patience and kindness. If you take your time when you approach me, you'll see what a loving fellow I really am. I lean right into every pet, and I absolutely enjoy being brushed. Gentle attention makes me feel safe, and before long, I'll be soaking up all the affection you have to offer.
You may notice that one of my eyes is smaller than the other. I have a condition called microphthalmia, which simply means one eye didn't develop to a normal size. The good news is that it doesn't cause me any medical problems, and I can probably even see out of it just fine. It's just one of the things that makes me uniquely me.
What I'm really hoping for is a soft landing with someone who understands that big life changes can be hard. In return, I'll be a devoted companion who appreciates every gentle touch, every brushing session, and every moment we spend together.

11. Abigail
Adult · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) · 7 mi from Jacksonville

Abigail is a beautiful 3yr old tabico (tortie/tabby mix). If you have ever had the luck to be loved by a tortie or a tabico, then you know how amazing (and a bit quirky lol) they are.Abigail takes her responsibilities as a personal bodyguard very seriously. She will guard the bathroom door, keep watch around the house, and make sure you are protected while you sleep. At night, she loves sleeping beside you and will occasionally curl up directly on your chest when she is feeling especially affectionate. She always lays against her foster mom's back or legs in bed when she sleeps. And she is the perfect welcome when you get home after a long day at the office.
Read more about Abigail
She will greet you at the door and she will ask you about your day with an inquisitive "meow?". She is also great at conversations. Especially when you tell her how pretty she is, when you are giving her food, or when she is receiving especially good pets. She is not, however, particularly helpful when it comes to making the bed. She thinks fresh sheets are an invitation to play, so making the bed usually takes about four times longer with her assistance! lol And she is an excellent hunter. She is completely captivated by bird and squirrel videos on YouTube. She will patiently watch, stalk, and wait for the perfect moment to pounce and can stay entertained for more than an hour.Abigail loves relaxing on her enclosed cat patio and enjoying fresh air through an open window where she can watch birds and chirp at all the critters. She is a loving, playful, funny and incredibly loyal companion and you will be a very lucky human if she chooses you. She really wants all of your attention so she will do best as the only feline queen in her new castle.Abigail has been spayed, tested for Felv/Fiv, vaccinated and microchipped

When he's not busy getting love from his foster mom (or taking a catnap of course lol), he loves to chase a string, play with his favorite catnip mouse and bicycle kick his bigger stuffed toy with his back feet while holding it. Young (4 months 29 days) · Female · Tortoiseshell / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

I’m Melody, and I’ve been singing my little heart-song ever since the day someone finally scooped me up from that big, lonely industrial park. I was just a tiny kitten trying to make sense of a world full of loud trucks and empty corners, doing my best to stay brave even when I felt very small.
Everything changed when a kind human noticed me. Now I get to be the sweet, playful girl I always wanted to be. I love batting at toys, chasing shadows, and curling right into your arms like it’s the safest place on earth. Being held is my favorite—maybe because I’m still making up for all those quiet, solitary days when no one was there to cuddle me.

Young (6 months) · Female · Tortoiseshell / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

My name is Paloma, I’ve been trying my very best to understand this whole “shelter life” thing. It hasn’t been easy for me — all the new sounds, new faces, and new routines can feel a little overwhelming. But every day, I’m starting to show more of who I really am: an affectionate, thoughtful kitty who wants to trust and be loved.
One of the things that helps me feel brave is playtime. I love batting toy balls and little mice around, especially when my brother Pablo joins in. He makes everything feel safer, and we have a great time chasing toys together.

My name is Pablo, and I’m the kind of cat who needs a little time and a little understanding before I feel safe. New places, new people, new routines — they can be overwhelming for me, and the shelter has definitely been a challenge.
The quickest way to my heart is play. If you pull a string or wiggle a toy, I can’t help myself — I have to go after it. I love chasing, pouncing, and showing off my moves. I also adore playing with my sister; she helps me feel brave, and I’d love a home where I can have another friendly cat buddy to keep me company.

Building that bond with Esther is truly special—but she appreciates having her boundaries respected and won't hesitate to let you know when she's had enough attention!

A lover of good food and comfortable lounging spots, Esther would thrive in a home that understands her independent nature and allows her to settle in at her own pace. In return, you'll gain a loyal companion whose trust and affection are well worth earning.
If you're looking for a playful, charming cat with a unique personality, Esther may be the perfect match for you.
26. Magnus
Young (5 months 30 days) · Male · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

Hi… I’m Magnus. I’m not the kind of cat who bursts into a room or demands attention. I was found outside all alone, and I learned early on that the world can be a lot. So I take my time. I watch. I think. I decide when I’m ready. That’s just how I’m built.
I can be playful — there are moments when something sparks in me and I’ll chase a toy or bat at a string with surprising enthusiasm. Other times I’m stoic and still, tucked away in a safe spot where I can observe everything without being in the middle of it. I hide a lot, but not because I don’t care… I just need to feel secure before I show you my softer side.

Dogs don’t bother me much. I’m cautious, but I don’t panic. I prefer calm, confident companions — especially another cat who isn’t pushy but knows how to have fun. A steady playmate would help me come out of my shell.
What I need most is patience. A home that understands I’m not going to be the cat who leaps into your lap on day one. But give me time, kindness, and space to grow, and you’ll see me slowly unfold into the sweet, thoughtful boy I really am.
Volunteer Update: Magnus has gained his confidence and is now a friendly outgoing guy. He may need a little patience when moving me to a new place, but he'll come around quickly.

27. Tiggy
Adult (4 years 2 months) · Female · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

I’m Tiggy, a girl with a pink little nose that tells the story of where I came from. I was surviving outside in a colony when kind people noticed me — especially the big scab on my nose. They reached out, discovered I was actually a total sweetheart, and took me to the vet. Turns out that injury wasn’t from a fight at all, but from a mosquito allergy. My nose has healed into a soft pink now, and it may stay that way forever. I think it makes me look pretty adorable.

I’m the kind of cat who adapts quickly once I know I’m safe. I just want to be close to the people I trust. I sit right beside them, rest my paw or my head on their hand, lean in gently — anything to show how much love I have to give. After everything I’ve been through, I’ve learned that affection is my favorite language, and I’m ready to share it with someone who sees the gentle heart behind my tough beginnings.

28. Leda
Young (5 months 12 days) · Female · Tabby / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

I’m Leda, the girl who likes to hang back at first—just a few steps behind the action, watching everything like I’m waiting for my official invitation to join the fun. I’m not shy, exactly… I just like to make sure the vibe is right before I jump in. But once you give me that little “come on in” moment, I’m suddenly the life of the party.

I’ll play with my siblings like we’ve got our own secret kitten nightclub, chase toys with all the enthusiasm in the world, and weave around my humans with happy little rubs that say I’m thrilled to be included. Treats? Toys? Attention? Yes, please. Once I feel welcome, I enjoy every bit of what’s being offered.
If you’re looking for a sweet, social girl who just needs a gentle invitation before she shows you her sparkling personality, I’m your Leda.

30. Castor
Young (5 months 16 days) · Male · Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Jacksonville

I’m Castor, the white‑and‑black boy with the thoughtful eyes and the soft heart. I like to take a moment to size things up when I meet someone new—just a little pause to be sure everything feels right. But once I decide you’re safe (and honestly, that doesn’t take long), I’m all in. I enjoy people, I enjoy other cats, and I enjoy being part of whatever gentle chaos is happening around me.

I’m a fan of the finer things in life: canned food, fun toys, and a good wrestling match with my siblings. I can be playful and silly, but I’ve also perfected a very specific look—the one that says “pet me, pet me” without me having to make a sound. I’ll sit there, eyes wide, whiskers forward, waiting for your hand to reach out. And when it does, I melt.
If you’re looking for a friendly, sweet companion who warms up quickly and loves being part of a family—whether human or feline—I’m your guy.

Our mission is to create a lasting relationship with you and your family. Adopt happiness. First, we like to have a phone chat to get a feel for the kind of dog that you’re looking for. Next, we have you fill out a foster application. After that, we come to your house with a carload of dogs for you to choose from and have you foster the dog of your choosing for a week to make sure that it’s a good fit. The last step is to finalize the adoption. And then congrats, you’re a new member of the Swamp Haven family and your happy tail has just begun! Our adoption fee is $300.
Adopting a cat in Jacksonville
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
