Princess Polly – A Little Fighter with a Whole Lot of Love to Give Hi, I'm Princess Polly! I've had quite the journey, and there was a time when I almost didn't get the chance to tell my story. But thanks to some pretty amazing people who refused to give up on me, I'm here today! My story began when some wonderful people found me lying outside their front door, barely able to move. They brought me inside and tried to help, but I was very sick. They took me to San Francisco Animal Care & Control (SFACC), where I was rushed to the emergency hospital. It turned out I had diabetes and was suffering from a life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Thankfully, the doctors stabilized me and started me on insulin. I had a microchip, but sadly, no one came to claim me. And that's when things got really scary. The kind people who found me never forgot about me. They checked with SFACC every single day to see how I was doing. Then came the news no one wanted to hear. If a rescue didn't commit to taking me by the end of the day, I would be euthanized. My finder wasn't about to let that happen without a fight. She reached out to Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue, begging them to help me. They immediately contacted SFACC and asked to review my medical records, which bought me a few precious days. At first, there were concerns that I might need hospice care. But my finder even had her own veterinarian review my records, and the vet believed I had a chance to recover. I was also showing signs of improvement during my time at SFACC. How could anyone give up on me when I was trying so hard to get better? Give Me Shelter decided to give me that chance, and that's how I became Princess Polly! And guess what? Just one week after arriving in foster care, I went to the vet, and my lab values were all within normal range! My blood sugar was still too high, but otherwise, I was doing remarkably well. I wasn't a hospice kitty after all. I was alive, getting stronger, and thriving! I'm one lucky girl to have had so many people advocating for me. Without them, I wouldn't be here today. Now, let me tell you about the real me! I'm a confident, affectionate girl who absolutely loves being loved. Petting is one of my favorite things, and I even have a signature move. When you stop petting me before I'm ready, I'll gently reach out with my paw, grab your hand, and pull it back toward me. That's my way of saying, "Excuse me, I wasn't finished!" It's pretty irresistible, if I do say so myself. I love being part of whatever you're doing, whether that's relaxing on the couch, working at your desk, or just hanging out together. I'm a wonderful companion who enjoys attention, affection, and being close to my people. Now, about my diabetes. I know it might sound intimidating, but I promise I'm a really good patient! I get insulin twice a day, and I'm so easygoing about my injections. I've even worked out a pretty sweet deal with my foster mom. Every time I get my insulin, I get a Churu treat! I know the routine, and I think it's a pretty fair trade. I'm also a champ when it comes to having my blood sugar checked. My foster mom uses a little glucose meter to make sure I'm doing well, and I cooperate like the good girl I am. I do have some funny eating habits. I'm more of a grazer than a finish-my-dinner-in-one-sitting kind of girl. My foster mom is working with me on that because a healthy diet is especially important for my diabetes. I love my treats, especially Churu, dehydrated chicken, and the occasional little bit of crunchy kibble! As for my forever home, I'd be perfectly happy being your one and only princess, but I could also share my kingdom with a mellow kitty friend. I've been through a lot, but none of it has changed my loving personality. I'm a happy, affectionate girl with so much love to give. I just need someone who understands that my diabetes is part of my life and is willing to help me stay healthy. So many people fought to give me a

Adult · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Tabby / Mixed

Junipurr (Juni) – A Shy Sweetheart with So Much Love to Give Hi there! My name is Junipurr, but you can call me Juni! I'm a sweet, gentle girl with stunning green eyes and a whole lot of love to give. I just need a little time to feel comfortable enough to show you. I was rescued from a feral cat colony in Fresno, and I've come a long way since then! I can be a little shy when meeting new people, so I appreciate a gentle approach and a little patience while I get to know you. Once I feel comfortable, my sweet, affectionate personality comes shining through. I absolutely adore pets and attention, and I have so much love to give! I'm a sensitive girl, so unfamiliar sounds and sudden movements can send me looking for a good hiding spot.

And trust me, I'm a professional hider! But with a little patience, some tasty treats, and gentle encouragement, I'll come out to say hello. Once I know I'm safe, my affectionate side really shines. I'm not a particularly high-energy kitty. I'd much rather curl up on your lap or settle into a cozy spot nearby and enjoy your company. I love rubbing my face against you, weaving around your legs, and soaking up all the pets I can get. When I'm feeling especially comfortable, I might even rub my face against yours and give you a few sweet kisses! I'll come when you call my name or pat your lap, too. Did I mention I'm a purring machine? I purr constantly when I'm happy, and I make the sweetest little trills and chirps to let you know how I'm feeling. My dream home would be a calm, quiet place where I can be your one and only kitty. I'd love a patient, understanding person who will give me the time I need to settle in. I also have some skin sensitivities, so I'm on a special novel protein diet that helps keep me comfortable and healthy. Concerned about me being FIV+? Don't be—there's lots of helpful information out there to put your mind at ease. I can live a long, healthy life, meow. If you'd like to learn more, here's a great resource from the Cornell University FIV Guide. I may take a little extra time to trust you, but once I do, you'll have a devoted, affectionate companion who will fill your days with purrs, chirps, and plenty of love. 9. Jolie
Kitten · Female · Domestic Short Hair

Jolie – Wobbly, Wonderful, and Full of Heart Hi there! My name is Jolie, and I may do things a little differently, but I don't let that stop me from enjoying life. I was found as a stray and brought to Oakland Animal Services before making my way to Give Me Shelter. I have moderate cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), a neurological condition I was born with that makes me a little wobbly when I walk. The good news? It isn't painful, it isn't contagious, and it doesn't slow me down nearly as much as you might think. I always find my way wherever I want to go! I'm a naturally curious girl. Once I think you're not watching, I'm off exploring every corner of the room, investigating anything new, and seeing what adventures await.

I also love toys and am perfectly happy entertaining myself, though I'd never turn down a play session with you. When we first meet, I might be a little cautious if you approach me too quickly. Give me a little time, settle in, and you'll see my confidence grow. Before long, I'll be scooting a little closer, keeping you company, and once we're friends, I'll even meow to let you know I'd like some attention. I'm also told my sploots are a perfect 10 out of 10! One thing I know for sure—I adore other cats. I love making feline friends and would be thrilled to have a gentle, friendly cat companion who can show me the ropes and keep me company. I especially enjoy watching what the "big cats" are up to and making new friends. I've figured out all kinds of clever ways to navigate the world. A short, carpeted cat tree is one of my favorite places because I can pull myself up with my strong little forearms and claws to enjoy the view. I'm also an A+ student when it comes to using my litter box. Once my setup is right, I'm really no more work than any other cat. If you're looking for a sweet, resilient companion who will make you smile every day, I'd love the chance to meet you. My walk may be a little wobbly, but my heart is steady, full of love, and ready for a family to call my own. Ariel – The Sweet Songbird with a Playful Heart Hi! I'm Ariel, though my foster family affectionately calls me "Ms. Purr." I always have something to say and I'm never shy about announcing when I've arrived! If you talk to me, I'll happily sing right back. Whether I'm asking for attention or reminding everyone that it's treat time, I love having little conversations with my people. I'm currently in foster with my brother, Banjo, and I definitely make sure everyone knows if he's getting treats or attention before I am! When I'm not chatting, you'll usually find me chasing wand toys, batting around little mice, or pouncing on anything that moves.

After I've finished playing, I love curling up on my favorite cozy blanket tucked behind a mirror, where I can enjoy a peaceful nap in my own little hideaway. People often notice my luxurious, silky black coat first, but it's my gentle, playful personality that really shines once you get to know me. I enjoy gentle pets once I get to know you, and I'm looking for a family that will let me settle in at my own pace. The more comfortable I become, the more my playful personality and cheerful songs come out. Banjo and I have a great time chasing each other around the house, but we don't have to be adopted together. I'd be happy to go home with my brother or start my next adventure with a family of my own. I was rescued in partnership with ACT Stockton S/N Clinic, and now I'm ready to find my forever home. Adult · Male · Domestic Short Hair

Prince – A Gentle Soul Looking for My Second Chance Hello! I'm Prince, and my journey to San Francisco began thousands of miles away in Qatar. I once had a family, but when they left the country, they left me behind to survive on the streets—a place I was never meant to call home. Thankfully, a kind rescuer took me in and made sure I could travel all the way to San Francisco for a chance at the forever family I've always deserved. If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I absolutely love people. My favorite place is wherever you are! I'll happily follow you from room to room, stroll over wherever you're sitting, flop onto my side, and wait for pets.

I love cuddling up next to my humans, soaking up affection, and making every visitor feel like an old friend. I'm confident, outgoing, and I've never met a stranger—I think everyone is a potential new best friend! Even after everything I've been through, I've never stopped trusting people. I'm not mischievous or demanding. I'm just a sweet, easygoing boy who's happiest spending time with the people I love. While I was living on the streets, I injured the area above my right eye, which left me with a scar. The good news is my eye wasn't damaged at all, and the scar is purely cosmetic. I think it just adds a little character to my handsome face! Concerned about me being FIV+? Don't be—there's lots of helpful information out there to put your mind at ease. I can live a long, healthy life, meow. If you'd like to learn more, here's a great resource from the Cornell University FIV Guide. I've decided I'd really love to be your one and only feline companion. That means I get all the attention, all the snuggles, and all the love—and trust me, I'll return it tenfold. After losing my first home, I'm hoping my next one will be forever. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will greet you with love, curl up beside you after a long day, and remind you every day just how special the bond between a person and a cat can be, I think we might be the perfect match. 13. Elastigirl
Adult · Female · Domestic Short Hair / Tabby / Mixed

Elastigirl — Your Constant Companion for Life's Everyday Adventures Hi, I'm Elastigirl! I almost didn't get my second chance. I was rescued from euthanasia at Stockton Animal Shelter, where I had become a volunteer favorite. Everyone who met me knew I was a special girl, and now I'm hoping to find the family who will love me forever. I'm the kind of cat who wants to be part of everything you do. Folding laundry? I'm there. Organizing a drawer? I'll supervise. Opening a box? I need to inspect it immediately. Wherever my people are, that's exactly where I want to be. I'm an exceptionally calm, confident, and curious girl who's nearly impossible to rattle.

Fireworks? Vacuum cleaners? Visitors? None of that bothers me much. Instead of hiding, I'm usually the first one to investigate what's going on. I also come when I'm called because spending time with my people is one of my favorite things. I form deep bonds with the people I love. I'll happily greet you at the door with my signature enthusiastic meow and be ready to hear all about your day. At bedtime, you'll usually find me sleeping beside you—or sometimes right on top of you. While I'm not much of a lap cat and prefer not to be carried, I absolutely love gentle scratches between my ears, along my cheeks, and down my back. I'll close my eyes, lean right into your hand, and soak up every second. My biggest purrs are reserved for making biscuits on a cozy blanket while cuddled up next to my favorite person. Playtime is where I truly shine. Wand toys are my absolute favorite, and I love chasing, jumping, pouncing, wrestling toys, and showing off my athletic moves. Interactive play is how I connect with my people, so I'm hoping to find a family that enjoys playing as much as I do. If I think you've been ignoring me for too long, I may follow you around, chat with you, or even give your ankle a gentle little tap to remind you it's time for another play session. I'm wonderfully easy to live with, too. I'm very tidy, use my litter box perfectly, groom myself beautifully, and don't leave much fur behind. I'm not especially food motivated, although I never turn down a Churu! My favorite meals are wet food mixed with extra water into a nice, soupy consistency. I do have a chronic upper respiratory condition that causes adorable little snuffles and noisy breathing. My rescue team even had a nasal scope performed to look for a treatable cause, but no nasal polyp was found. While you may occasionally notice a little nasal discharge, it's simply part of who I am. My happy snorts and sniffles make it extra easy to know when I'm excited to see you! Concerned about me being FIV+? Don’t be—there’s lots of helpful information out there to put your mind at ease. I can live a long, healthy life, meow. If you’d like to learn more, here’s a great resource from Cornell University FIV Guide. I'd do best in an active home with plenty of everyday activity. I would likely become bored in a very quiet home, but if you're looking for a cat who wants to be your sidekick through every project, every chore, and every cozy evening, I think we're going to make a wonderful team. I can't wait to meet you! Rescued from euthanasia at Stockton Animal Shelter. Meet Claudia! — The Playful, Curious Explorer I'm an energetic, curious little girl who loves to play and explore! Feather wands and spring toys are my favorites, and I'm quite the athlete. Gabby — Playful, Chatty, and Full of Tortie Charm Hi, I'm Gabby! If you're looking for a cat who will keep you smiling with her playful antics, adorable little chirps, and endless personality, I just might be your girl. I'm a beautiful tortie with lots of energy and an even bigger heart. I love to play, whether it's chasing toys, exploring every corner of the house, or finding the perfect spot to launch into my next adventure. Once I've gotten my zoomies out, I'm happy to curl up for a cozy nap—especially if there's a soft blanket involved. One of my favorite things in the whole world is head scratches.

Give me a few good scratches, and I'll happily reward you with my sweet little squeaks and chirps. I'm quite the conversationalist and love letting you know what I'm thinking throughout the day. At bedtime, you'll usually find me sleeping at the foot of the bed. I like being close to my people and quietly keeping them company while we all get some rest. Like many cats, I'm happiest when I can choose how I receive affection. I enjoy pets and attention on my own terms and prefer to keep all four paws on the ground instead of being carried around. My future family will understand that respecting my boundaries is just another way of earning my trust. I also have a few favorite hideaways under the coffee table, couch, or bathroom sink. They're my cozy little retreats when I want a quiet moment before I'm ready to come back out and join the fun. I get along well with other cats and would be happy joining a home with a feline friend. I also think I'd do just fine as your one-and-only, as long as I have plenty of playtime, enrichment, and love. If you're looking for a playful, affectionate companion with a big personality, a sweet voice, and plenty of tortitude to keep life interesting, I'd love to meet you. 16. Tucker
Adult · Male · Domestic Short Hair / Tabby / Mixed

Tucker — A Resilient Survivor with the Sweetest Heart Hi, I'm Tucker. For a long time, I didn't know what it felt like to be safe. I survived outside by myself, where other cats constantly bullied me, chased me away from food and shelter, and left me with scratches and injuries. I was always hungry, always exhausted, and always looking over my shoulder. The saddest part? Even after everything, I still wanted people. I still wanted someone to love me. When I eventually showed up with a badly injured front paw, my rescuers knew I couldn't keep surviving on my own. That's when they discovered I'd originally been trapped at an encampment in Oakland and relocated through a working cat program for rodent control.
Read more about Tucker
Somehow, I had survived on my own for months before finally finding the backyard where someone noticed I needed help. Thankfully, those days are behind me. Now that I've had time to settle into a foster home, everyone is discovering what a truly special boy I am. I'm incredibly affectionate and absolutely adore head scratches, belly rubs, and spending time with my people. One of my favorite things is sneaking into bed in the middle of the night for a few quiet cuddles and gentle pats before drifting back to sleep. I also have a wonderfully playful side. Wave a wand toy, toss me a ball, and I'm ready to play for as long as you are. As my confidence has grown, I've started exploring more of the house during the day and have even found my voice—I love chatting with my foster family when I think it's time for another play session or a little extra attention. I'm still learning that the world is a safe place, so quick movements can surprise me. But the sweetest part is that I always come right back. Every day I become a little braver, a little more relaxed, and a little more convinced that people are pretty wonderful. Because of my past, I'll do best with someone patient who understands that trust takes time. I also appreciate when people listen to my signals during petting. If I've had enough, I'll give you a gentle tap with my paw to let you know it's time for a little break. I'm simply learning that I don't have to be afraid anymore—I can trust my person to understand me. One other thing to know about me: after everything I'd been through living outside, my tummy needed a little extra care. I've been eating a prescription diet while my foster family helped get my digestive system back on track, and I'm doing so much better! I'm now starting the transition back to a regular diet, though my future family should keep an eye on my tummy and work with their veterinarian if any sensitivities pop up again. Concerned about me being FIV+? Don't be! Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives, and there's lots of great information out there to put your mind at ease. If you'd like to learn more, here's a great resource from Cornell University. After everything I've endured, I've discovered that what I wanted all along wasn't freedom—it was a family. A warm bed. A full belly. Someone to curl up beside at 3 a.m. because I finally know I'll still be loved when I wake up. Maybe that someone is you. Bubba — Your Loyal Little Shadow (With the World's Best Nap Game) Hi there! I'm Bubba, an adorable orange tabby Manx with a tiny tail, a big heart, and a very important title: World Champion Napper. If there's a cozy blanket nearby, you can bet I'll be curled up on it, dreaming about my next snack or play session. Before coming to Give Me Shelter, I was abandoned in Fresno. Thankfully, those days are behind me, and now I'm ready to find a forever family that will never leave me behind again. I'm the kind of cat who loves being part of whatever you're doing. You won't usually find me sitting in your lap, but you'll almost always find me nearby.

Cooking dinner? I'll supervise from a few feet away. Watching TV? I'll be lounging on my favorite cardboard scratcher. Heading to the bathroom? Yep...I'll come keep you company there too. I just like being close to my people. I'm also quite the conversationalist. I have the sweetest little voice and love checking in with gentle chats throughout the day. Whether I'm saying hello, asking how your day is going, or simply reminding you I'm nearby, I always have something to say. Head scratches are one of my favorite things in the world, and once you start, I'll happily lean in for more. I can be a little cautious in new surroundings at first, but once I settle in, my affectionate personality really shines. When I'm not perfecting my nap schedule, I enjoy chasing toys, batting things around the house, and entertaining myself with a good game even when no one's watching. I'm playful, a little goofy, and full of classic orange-cat charm—just maybe with slightly better judgment than the average orange cat. If you're looking for a sweet companion who will quietly keep you company, chat about your day, and always make sure you're never alone in a room, I think we might be the perfect match. I was rescued after being abandoned in Fresno, and now I'm ready for the happy ending I've been waiting for. Could that be with you? Jazzy — A Lap Cat Looking for Her Purrfect Person Hi there! I'm Jazzy, and if you're looking for a devoted companion who believes laps were invented just for cats, I think we might be the perfect match. My favorite place in the whole world is curled up in your lap. I'll happily climb aboard, settle in, and ask for gentle head rubs while I purr away. Head scratches are definitely my love language! I'm not a big fan of being petted all over my body, though—I much prefer affection on my terms. I'm a sweet, friendly girl who has been adjusting nicely to my foster home. Sudden movements can still make me a little nervous while I'm getting used to new places, but everyday household noises, like the washing machine, don't bother me at all.

Tess — Tiny in Size, Big on Personality Don’t let my petite size fool you—I have a whole lot of love (and opinions!) packed into this little package. I’m a friendly, confident girl who enjoys meeting new people and doesn’t spend much time hiding. Whether you’re folding laundry, working from home, or relaxing on the couch, chances are I’ll be nearby keeping you company. I love being part of whatever you’re doing, and I’m happy to supervise your daily routine from a comfy chair or by following you from room to room. I’m also quite the conversationalist! I’ll happily chat with you about dinner, remind you when it’s time for treats, or simply tell you about my day.

And when I’m in the mood for affection, you won’t have to guess—I’ll meow, hop up to meet your hand, or climb right into your lap to collect the pets I deserve. While I enjoy attention, I also appreciate when people listen to my cues. If I’ve had enough petting, I’ll politely let you know with a gentle paw or soft nip (never a real bite). I’m looking for someone who understands that every cat has boundaries and appreciates clear communication. I prefer a peaceful home where I can truly relax. Loud noises aren't my thing, and I'd be happiest as your one and only feline companion. I have so much love to give that I don't feel the need to share the spotlight with another cat! My journey hasn't been easy. I lost my home when my person was deployed, and the shelter environment at Peninsula Humane Society was simply too stressful for me. Thankfully, Give Me Shelter stepped in to give me another chance at finding the quiet, loving home I've been waiting for. If you're looking for a loyal little shadow who will chat with you, keep you company, and happily fill your home with love, I think we should meet. Rescued from Peninsula Humane Society. Samba — Chatty, Affectionate, and Full of Purrsonality Hello there! My name is Samba, and if you're looking for a cat who has something to say, I might be your purrfect match. I'm a beautiful, petite Maine Coon mix with a luxurious long coat, a big personality, and plenty of charm. I weigh about 10 pounds, but I have all the wonderful traits people love about Maine Coons—I'm incredibly people-oriented, communicative, and devoted to my humans. I was originally adopted from Give Me Shelter in 2021, and while my person loves me dearly, he is moving overseas and feels such a big move would be too much for me.

So now I'm looking for a new family to love. I'm a wonderfully chatty cat who loves interacting with my people, and I'd be happiest with someone who enjoys carrying on conversations with their feline companion. I have a whole vocabulary of chirps, meows, and commentary, and I'm not shy about using it. I love sunbathing, but don't let my love of sunny naps fool you—I also have a playful side! Wand toys are one of my favorites, and I really enjoy batting around my automatic interactive toy. After a fun play session, you'll usually find me stretched out in a sunny window watching birds, bugs, and all the neighborhood happenings. Most of all, I'm an affectionate girl who loves being close to my people. I'll happily snuggle in bed, curl up beside you on the couch, soak up pets and head scratches, and remind you just how special it is to share your life with a cat. Whether it's a long cuddle session or just a quick scritch on the head, I'm always happy to receive a little love. I eat Hill's Prescription Diet z/d dry food to help keep me feeling my best, and while I don't care much for brushing, I do enjoy being pampered with a grooming glove. If you're looking for a loyal companion with a big heart, a playful spirit, and plenty to say, I'd love to meet you. How to adopt from Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue
All of our adopters are required to fill out an online application. Once we review the application, we contact the applicant to do a phone interview, and a zoom call to meet and learn more about the cat with the foster parent to determine if it's a good fit for everyone. Then the potential adopter can meet the cat in person and take them home if approved through this process. We have them sign an adoption agreement and pay $150 adoption fee.
Adopting a cat in San Francisco County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the cat, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your cat in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior cats are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate cat, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Kittens go quickly, especially in spring and summer. If you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon, and think about adopting two: young cats keep each other company and out of mischief.
